working with others

Defined : Creating a working environment where effective and efficient work is accomplished.
Criteria: I use a framework called the 5 commitments.

1. When there is a gap between what I expected and what I experienced, I will believe the best.

2. When other people assume the worst about you, I will come to your defense.

3. If what I experience begins to erode my trust, I will come directly to you about it.

4. When I'm convinced I will not be able to deliver on a promise, I will inform you ahead of time.

5. When you confront me about the gaps I've created, I will tell you the truth.

Artifact and Reflection: Deep and Wide

During two summers of my college career I interned at Northpoint Church in Austin. Through this internship I was equipped by experiences that were beyond my leadership capacity and practical tools to navigate me through those experiences. The most relevant to working with others is The 5 commitments framework mentioned in the book Deep and Wide by Andy Stanley. As interns we were required to read through and discuss this book with fellow interns. I remember being awestruck every chapter of this book when I would read how the purpose and thought put into the arrangement and strategy of a church that the unchurched love to attend. Our goal as an intern team of five that summer, was to create environments described in the book.

In order to do so we need a framework for how we were going to work on a team. One was our role organization. We were constantly saying to each other that we needed to stay in our own lane (responsibilities). The other was the 5 Commitments that are listed as my Criteria for working with others. I continuously refer to this framework when I am working with teams. The first commitment, believing the best, has been the most impoactful and helps me in all relationships in my life and allows me to shape a positive worldview.

I am aware that most of my Talent Themes fall into the category of relationship building and that Talent Themes require effort to develop them into strengths. I saw it work with a team of five church interns by encouraging trust in each others strengths and ensuring personal competencies. I hope that the teams I work on in the future have the same cohesive feel and would like to apply the 5 Commitments whenever I can.
