Four Weeks In

This summer I am excited to be working for Accenture, in Houston within their consulting group. I will briefly give overviews of each week while I experience a learning curve like I never have before. The following is key tasks, lessons learned, and a personal loss during my fourth week of work.

During this week, I lost a friend and fellow classmate, Caroline Killian. During my sophomore year at Texas A&M we served on leadership for a freshman leadership organization called PREP. Serving alongside another person brings a special bond that is cultivated under the weight of responsibility and passion for others. I found out in the middle of a highly anticipated conference at work and was stressed by the emotions, responsibilities, and pressures of the hour. My team at work could not have reacted better. I was honest with them and took time for myself by leaving and returning to work the next day, not healed from the loss, but encouraged that I was cared for as a whole person.

My personal life has changed tones for the summer, but I am encouraged more that this company is the place for me. This week had many events and another big one was seeing that my major may not be used very much in the career I chose.

Tasks Accomplished

  • Learned how to use PicMonkey application

  • Create thank you collage

  • Create banner for email collage

  • Take notes about the main sessions on Day Four

  • Update slideshow everyday by lunch

  • Networked with S3 Program team members during lunches and breaks

  • Expand Priorities spreadsheet with more examples of how I demonstrate qualities of an analyst

Day of Responsibilities

  • Open all presentation material on the loaner laptop before we get in there

  • Julianna and Krista took this task

  • Print Materials

  • Awareness of all Forum aspects ready to help with anything that went astray

Lessons Learned

  • I enjoy listening to how people talk about finance (the set-up of the activity, the dynamic of how people talk to each other, etc.) more than hearing what they have to say about finance

  • The environment in which you work is important and can be shown very easily when a crisis happens. It is easy to see the care of my team here at S3 when I had a friend pass away suddenly. I felt genuinely cared for when two co-workers brought down my bag just so I didn't have to come back up. I am extremely thankful for a team and environment like this.

  • The difference between work and personal life is a change in dynamic and tasks at hand, but we are all very human. I continue to enjoy this job to where the hours go fast and I am excited to learn. I do not watch the clock to leave but enjoy the challenge of continuous learning and being human in what I do.
