This past weekend, all of the US and Canada interns from Accenture gathered in St. Charles Illinois at the Accenture training facility. We got to learn from various leaders from across Accenture functions and regions. I had many impactful moments this weekend but one was watching the video about an initiative named ID2020. Below is a link to a website about the initiative below.

I was listening to our presenter who is the CHRO for Accenture. She is often called a mother to those who she works with. She was sharing some of the initiatives that Accenture is working on including a new subway app that was just released for ordering sandwiches (sandwiches were served as soon as the word “Subway” was spoken – pretty cool). The other project she highlighted was the ID 2020 initiative, a partnership between Microsoft and Accenture. The initiative was presented to the UN recently. My heart ached because of the amount of refugees solely highlighted in the video. My eyes were watering watching the video and I felt a slight pressure to keep it together in a professional setting.

ID2020 uses blockchain technology to give those who need identification a digital form of identification only they can access and share. I am unfamiliar with blockchain but there was a fellow inter at conference who had the courage to come on stage to explain. I think most of us were relieved by the explanation. She described the technology as an interconnected web of honeycombs that only certain people have access to certain honeycombs but everyone can view. I continue to read articles as this technology seems to be the next big trend.

Working for Accenture has changed my perspective to see the good that technology is capable of. I think I can be pessimistic regarding trendy technologies but I was refreshed by a technology for a humanitarian cause.

My heart breaks for those thrown from their homes, and people cannot get certain needs like healthcare because of the lack of a document. I do not mean to make my summer experience equal to the refugee experience but this summer I have very much felt like I have been living as a nomad. I feel thrown from my home and that there is much more effort in maintaining relationships that come with ease when I am back home or in College Station. This video though changed my perspective that I may be living as a nomad now, but I know who I am. I have the documentation of a US citizens but I am talking on a deeper level. I know that I am a child of God and that I was created to be in community and live adventurously for the literal creator of the world. Moving forward I hope to find a way that I can practically remind myself every day of my bigger identity, and help others know that they have that same identity and that they add value to the world.
